No matter how cool headed you are and try to focus in your work, workplace conflicts are almost unavoidable. Whether you work in a software development company or a FMCG production unit, occasional and unforeseen clashes with colleagues can take place. While you may feel provoked to give the other party a piece of your mind, it is far better to take steps to keep such problems at bay. You may not be able to get into such hassles in totality but it will be possible to avoid a lot of such pesky situations if you are a little careful. Employees who succeed in avoiding hassle at workplace can focus on their work better and remain in good books of the management.

Learn why conflicts take place

If you want to avoid clashes with coworkers at office it is better that you learn the roots of such problems. While there can be myriads of conflicts in an organization between employees and different departments, most such clashes are caused by some fundamental factors.

Turf battles are quite commonplace in offices. It can be within same department or between staffs of two sections who cannot agree on which part they should do. Disagreements can also take place between two employees or more regarding how a thing should be done. Issues like seniority and lack of experience can creep into such situations. When different types of people are placed in same group and they need to collaborate for work, conflicts can happen. For example, if you are a multitasking pro and your coworker in next cubicle is slow at work, clashes can occur. Lack of proper communication and misinterpretation of a message can also lead to clashes at workplace. It leads to assumptions which can be wrong and affects productivity.

How to deal with conflicts at office and avoid them

Tackle issues before they turn into problems- May clashes at offices take place because concerned persons leave certain key issues unnoticed or simply ignore them till they manifest into serious problems. Hence, it is better you address topics which may turn into bigger problems in long run.

Handle issues in a direct manner- While email and messaging has become a widespread and convenient habit to interact with colleagues at workplaces, nothing can beat face to face communication. A short message sent to your colleagues may not be understood or may be misinterpreted. Therefore, try to address issues that need co operation by talking with the concerned person directly.

Take note of your reactions- At times, all of us tend to snap and overreact but at the office, this should be kept within limits. You may feel pissed off with some personal issues but do not take that out on your colleagues when they make a mistake or do something against your expectation. Try to be polite and professional no matter how tensed you are otherwise. At times, you may also express your displeasure through silence and that may work better than words.

Be good with words you use- At workplaces, everything you do or say gets noticed. Therefore, do not say anything that can have a negative connotation or may act as a provocation. It is better to think before you speak something on a serious and sensitive issue at workplace.

Avoid getting into arguments with your senior- At times, your senior colleagues like team leader or manager may get an impression you are not working properly or your performance is below expectation. He or she may be wrong as well. However, when you get into such a situation, listen more than you speak at that point. Later, you can surely get back to the concerned senior colleague and explain your viewpoint. Chances are there he or she might acknowledge your points. However, trying to prove your righteousness at that excited moment may do more harm than good as it has been seen in a number of cases.
